Ask Jay: Dead batteries and practising blowjobs

Out of energy asks: The battery in my toy keeps dying. I'm sure it's charged when I put it away, then I take it out of its case and it's dead! Is the toy a goner or is there something I can do to fix this?

Jay answers: I'm sorry to hear your toy is losing its charge while in storage. That has got to be frustrating. Ideally a toy should be "good to go" when you are.

There are probably one of three things happening here. I'll list them in what I believe to be the easiest-to-fix to hardest-to-fix order:

  • If it has been a long time between uses the toy might be discharging before you get to it. This usually doesn't happen unless it has been months between recharges. But if you do go a few months between sessions, consider recharging the toys once a month. I put a reminder on my phone to do this.
Work, PTA meeting, pay rent, charge toys...

  • It could be that the source of the power when you're charging your toy isn't strong enough. I usually plug my toys into a charging block or my computer's USB port. Different charge blocks have different electrical output so it's possible your toy isn't getting enough juice. Try plugging your toy into your computer's USB port or pick up a higher-powered charge block from your local electronic store.
  • The battery could be dying. Usually rechargeable batteries last several years, but I've encountered toys with a battery defect that made them drain quickly within the first few months. If this has happened the company who made the toy should replace it. Check out their website and contact their customer service team.
  • One of those three options should have your toy back in good working order and make your frisky sessions less frustrating.

Practise makes perfect asks: Is it safe to practise my blowjob skills on a dildo?

Jay answers: Two thoughts went through my mind when I read your question. The first was that it depends on the shape and size of the dildo. The main risk that comes from practising your blowjob skills (especially deepthroat skills) on an object is that it could slip down your throat and cause you to choke. This is why I recommend people do not (repeat not) use long, thin objects like toothbrushes, spoons, and pens to show off their blowjob prowess. These are all choking hazards.

Take a look at the Romp Hype, for example. You can see this toy is fairly uniform and smooth all the way down its length. This makes it a great sex toy for vaginal use, but a potentially dangerous toy to put in your throat.
This is made for your G-spot, not your throat.

On the other hand, a dildo that has a wide or flared base should be safe to use. Toys such as the Nexus Galaxie, which has a flared bottom are relatively safe because the wide bottom makes it almost impossible for the toy to slip and fall down your throat. (I say "almost impossible" because I'm really hoping no one tries to prove me wrong.)
This is good for your G-spot AND your throat.

In short, if you feel like practising on a toy like a dildo, please make sure its base is too wide to fit in your mouth.

I mentioned having two thoughts with regards to this question. The second is that most dildos have a silicone skin. This is safe to put in your body as long as it is cleaned after each use. The material of the dildo won't harm you and is safe to put in your mouth, vagina, or bottom. (Assuming, of course, you don't have any allergies to silicone.)

In short, go ahead and get yourself a flared-base toy and try out your blowjob skills!
