Shopping for a vibrator online

Hello, I'm Jay, a sex-positive gentleman from Nova Scotia. A little while ago I wrote about the large and diverse Family Tree of Vibrators. There are a lot of different types of vibrators in the world, designed for a whole range of sensations and preferences. Perhaps inspired by this post, the question was raised what should a person be looking for with their first toy?

In my response I suggested that rather than focus on trying to find one Mr Right Vibrator, someone new to purchasing buzzy toys might be best off trying a wide selection. Don't worry about picking the right vibrator, I opined, just try a handful of toys and find out what you like first. Then focus on finding the Right Toy For You (tm). However, in hindsight this answer didn't really get to the core of the issue: how does a person know what to look for when looking for a good vibrator?

Like this purple people pleaser!

With that in mind, this week I'm going to assume that you have looked around and are getting an idea of what types of toys make your pulse quicken. Next, how do you know what to look for when you go to buy a quality vibe that will hopefully continue to give you pleasure for years? I'd like to share six tips and some favourites from each toy category to help you get started, particularly if you are shopping online.

1. Pick a type of vibrator

As I mentioned before in the Ask Jay post, the first thing to do is figure out which type of toy appeals to you. If you haven't decided yet, browse through our article on the history and types of vibrators available. There are hundreds of different models of vibes online and narrowing down what you're looking for to one category will help a great deal. So first things first, decide whether you want to experience clitoral suction, the heavy pulsating of a wand, or maybe the soft buzz of a classic vibe. Then we can begin the search!

2. Set a budget

You can't put a price tag on happiness, but shops do put price tags on vibrators. For each category of vibe there is a wide range in the prices of specific toys. On the low end we can find some inexpensive, but sometimes lower quality, items. On the upper end there are some amazing luxury toys. Ideally we don't want to buy something too cheap because, well, we may get what we paid for and the toy may not last. However, there is a point at the higher end when a toy's extra features just aren't going to be worth it.

Try to get a sense of your price range before you go shopping. For almost everyone there is a sweet spot in the middle of the scale where you can find good quality products without breaking the bank.

Don't worry, little guy

3. Read and watch product reviews

Often times when a product is amazing or consistently has problems, people will write about it or post videos about the toy online. It's a good idea to check out product reviews of toys you're considering buying to see what people rave or rant about.

A word of caution though: avoid reading the comments or testimonials on the website you are purchasing from. Often times fake reviews are created by company employees or by automated apps to try to boost sales. Check out reviews from regular bloggers and watch videos on new products published by the company that makes the toys. This can give you a better sense of what the toy is designed to do and what does (or doesn't) work properly.

4. Hunt for key features

While the styles of vibrator and the available features on each model can vary a lot, there are a few key points each quality vibrator should have these days. Virtually every well made toy should have:

  • Multiple speeds
  • Be waterproof
  • Be made out of medical grade silicone
  • Be rechargable
  • Offer at least a one-year warranty.

Any vibrator which does not meet the criteria of the above list probably isn't one you want to invest in. Keeping an eye out for the above terms in the product's description can help a lot.

5. Check in with your friendly expert

One of the biggest hurdles to picking out a good vibrator is that most people don't get a lot of exposure to them. Not a lot of people discuss their favourite sex toys around the office water cooler or talk about their toy preferences publicly on social media. But do you know who does immerse themselves in the little details of vibrators of all shapes and sizes? People who work in adult toy stores! These folks live, breathe, and test vibrators all the time. They get feedback from customers about what works and what doesn't. They know which toys result in people going "Yay!" and which ones produce a "meh". Feel free to call, e-mail, or drop by the shop and someone will be happy to answer your questions.

6. Tried and tested toys

If, after browsing around, you're still not sure which specific toy will spin your top, then I have a few suggestions. These are some favourite and popular items from each category of the vibrator family tree. For instance, for direct clitoral stimulation it's hard to go wrong with the We-Vibe Tango. It's sleek, sexy, and powerful. On a related note, if what you want is more of a sucking or massaging sensation on your clitoris rather than a buzzing one, may I suggest the Womanizer Premium.

This thing will make you lose count of your orgasms

What if you want more internal stimulation than what these toys offer? Or better yet, want the best of both worlds: clitoral and vaginal pulsating action! In that case you may want to check out the Miss Bi, a delightful dual-sensation vibrator that will knock your socks off!

The world's forerunner in sock removal

Last, but certainly not least, do you like the idea of wearing a smaller vibrator that your partner can control remotely? Something that you can use either in the bedroom or discreetly in public? In that case you need look no further than the We-Vibe Chorus. It's small, it's powerful, and it speeds up when your partner squeezes the remote, giving a more direct connection between the two of you. I love how small and flexible this little toy is and it's a lot of fun when going on dates to noisy places. The Chorus can also be controlled remotely using a smart phone, making ideal if you and your partner are trying to stay connected over a long distance.

Hopefully these tips will help you find the toy of your dreams. And, when in doubt, reach out to your friendly, local professional. They're here to help you find the vibrator that will make you feel fantastic!
